Reading and writing help you improve your knowledge. They are essential skills that can greatly benefit your studies and future success. There are many positive aspects of reading and writing, along with a few challenges.

Do you engage in reading and writing as a hobby?

In my opinion, you should develop reading and writing as hobbies because they are highly beneficial for both you and your brain. Reading books allows you to learn new things and expand your vocabulary. It enhances your knowledge and understanding of different topics. Personally, I enjoy reading books in my free time, especially storybooks. Reading contributes to success by improving pronunciation and spelling, particularly when encountering difficult words in stories.

Many book lovers often visit libraries, as they offer access to a variety of new and interesting books. Readers are generally regarded as knowledgeable individuals in society.

Are you interested in reading books? If not, I encourage you to start reading today, as it is extremely beneficial.

Positive Aspects of Reading

  • Enhances knowledge

  • Improves academic performance

  • Expands vocabulary

  • Provides valuable life lessons

Now, let’s talk about writing. Both reading and writing play a crucial role in our lives. In my opinion, writing is equally important. If you are skilled in writing, you can find job opportunities more easily, and it also helps improve your academic performance.

There are many talented writers in the world who create books, novels, stories, articles, and poems. Writers hold a respected position in society and are considered valuable contributors. Additionally, writing helps enhance your writing skills.

Therefore, as a hobby, you should practice and develop both your reading and writing abilities to improve your overall skills.

Are Computer Games Good for You?

Written by Iranga Lakshitha

We all have different feelings and opinions on this topic. Have you ever thought about it? Computer games are popular among both children and adults. Most computer games are based on artificial intelligence (AI). Nowadays, around 90% of people play computer games. These games are often interesting, enjoyable, and fun. Many people play them in their free time to relax and unwind.

I am a computer game player myself. I play computer games in my free time, and in my opinion, they are very entertaining. Some of my favorites include Free Fire, Call of Duty, and PUBG, but my absolute favorite is Free Fire. I usually play for about two hours a day. In Sri Lanka, around 70% of people play Free Fire. This game has excellent quality and features. I think you might be a Free Fire fan too! My future dream is to become a gaming streamer.

Are you a computer game player?

There are both positive and negative aspects of computer games. Now, let me discuss these two points further.

Positive Aspects of Computer Games:

  • Helps to relax the mind
  • Can make money through streaming

After a long day of work, playing computer games can help relax your mind and reduce stress. Gaming is fun, engaging, and provides entertainment. Nowadays, many people have turned gaming into a career by streaming their gameplay online. Gaming streamers can be found worldwide, making money while doing something they love.

Negative Aspects of Computer Games:

  • Addiction
  • Wasting money

One of the major downsides of gaming is addiction. Playing games daily can lead to addiction because of the engaging characters and features. In extreme cases, some people become so addicted that it negatively affects their lives. In some unfortunate instances, excessive gaming addiction has even led to tragic consequences like suicide. Another issue is spending too much money on in-game purchases, which can become a financial burden over time.

Conclusion

In conclusion, computer games have both positive and negative aspects. It is important to play in moderation and maintain a balance between gaming and other responsibilities.

The Importance of Friendship: What Makes a Good Friend?

The importance of friendship, something you hear about a lot. The other day, I searched it up and found 20 different long articles from 20 different websites, each with their own take on the subject. But in this blog, we’re just going to stick to the basic fundamentals of why friendship matters.

First, let’s quickly define what a "friend" is. A friend is someone you share a relationship with, someone you talk to about everyday things, and sometimes even personal matters. Friends can come from anywhere: work, school, or even completely random places.

Now, what makes a good friend? There are many defining factors, but some key ones include being supportive, always there for you, and willing to stand by you through thick and thin.

A friend should be supportive. When you’re going through a tough time, a good friend will be there for you emotionally and mentally. But let me be clear: being supportive doesn’t always mean being nice. A true friend might scold you or even shout at you if you’ve done something wrong—but it’s always for your own good. During your struggles, a supportive friend stays by your side, offering strength when you need it most.

Another important factor is compromise or even sacrifice. If a friend is willing to adjust for you, that’s a sign of a strong bond. For example, say you love German food, but your friend prefers Japanese. This creates a conflict of interest. If your friend agrees to eat German with you without argument, that’s a small sacrifice. They didn’t complain or cancel; they simply went along with your choice.

Compromise is slightly different. Instead of one person giving in, you find a middle ground. Using the same example, rather than choosing just German or Japanese, you could go to both restaurants, pick a mixed cuisine place, or order takeout from each. That way, both preferences are respected.

At the end of the day, a good friend makes life easier, funnier, and a little less lonely. That is worth holding onto.

Computer Games Are Good for You as Well as Fun

The statement that computer games, or video games, are both fun and beneficial is something I strongly agree with to a great extent.

People argue both sides—some say games are bad, while others say they are good. In my personal opinion, video games are good, but only if played in moderation. The idea that these games should not be played at all is completely wrong.

Games are not only fun but can also be educational. For example, they can teach you about technology. In my personal experience, video games sparked my interest in computer hardware, leading me to learn about components like CPUs, GPUs, and how they function together. Many gamers eventually become interested in coding or game development because of their exposure to technology through gaming.

Games can also improve storytelling skills. Some video games have outstanding storylines with deep characters, unexpected plot twists, and rich world-building. Games like The Witcher 3, Red Dead Redemption 2, and The Last of Us provide cinematic storytelling experiences that can inspire creative writing. Players who follow these narratives closely can learn how to develop compelling stories of their own.

However, as I mentioned earlier, gaming is only beneficial when a proper limit is set. Excessive gaming can lead to addiction, where players spend hours upon hours in front of a screen. This not only harms the eyes but also kills productivity and efficiency in completing more important tasks. Do you really want to lose track of time and neglect your responsibilities?

Another downside is that the benefits of gaming, such as improved storytelling or technical knowledge, depend on the game and the player’s mindset. Simply playing a game with a good story does not automatically make someone a great writer. The person must actively analyze and apply the concepts they learn. Similarly, not everyone who plays games will develop an interest in hardware or programming—it depends on their level of curiosity and willingness to explore beyond gaming itself.

Additionally, excessive gaming can lead to health problems. Sitting for long periods with little exercise can result in weight gain, poor posture, and even health issues like diabetes. Many gamers struggle with maintaining a healthy lifestyle because they prioritize gaming over physical activity. A lack of movement leads to reduced fitness, which can cause long-term health consequences.

In conclusion, video games can be both fun and educational when played in moderation. They can introduce players to technology, enhance creative skills, and provide an engaging experience. However, without balance, gaming can lead to addiction and health risks. The key is simple: enjoy gaming, but always maintain control.

THE IMPACT OF COMPUTER GAMES ON CHILDREN

The Impact of Computer Games on Children

Basically, computer games are made out of technology from digital devices. Usually, computer games are played by children because they enjoy the animations and the act of clicking buttons. However, this can lead to addiction. Children’s minds are playful, so they naturally turn to games for entertainment. There are several types of games to play, but shooting games are not ideal because they can cause children to become violent due to addiction in the future.

Firstly, gaming can affect education because addicted children may spend more time playing games instead of focusing on their studies. Games can also cause health problems, as addiction may lead to mental issues.

On the positive side, games can be fun and relaxing. Some games are even related to education, helping to engage and teach players. Games often show animated pictures, which can help relax our minds. About 95% of people enjoy playing games, and there are billions of games available for every type of interest. Most people, about 99%, download games from the Play Store, Apple Store, or popular gaming websites.

Many children play games using various devices such as phones, televisions, tablets, and simulators. These games are often considered “inventory games.” However, addiction to games can waste time and money, as children often spend money on in-game items that enhance their gaming experience.

CREATIVITY

Creativity

Creativity is often seen as a special gift, reserved for artists or innovators. But in reality, creativity is a natural human trait that exists in everyone. It is not confined to one form of expression but can be found in the way we solve problems, express emotions, and adapt to new challenges. Whether you’re a writer, a musician, or someone who loves to cook, creativity is all around us, waiting to be nurtured. The good news? You don’t need to wait for a "eureka" moment; with the right mindset and habits, creativity can become an integral part of your everyday life.

Building Creative Habits

Creativity isn’t something that only strikes in flashes of inspiration. It’s often the result of consistent practice and dedication. To cultivate creativity, it’s important to build habits that keep your mind engaged and open to new possibilities. Start by setting aside time every day to do something creative, whether it’s sketching, writing, or simply brainstorming ideas. Even small, daily actions can help develop your creative muscle, allowing you to approach challenges with a fresh perspective. Creativity thrives on routine, so make time for it, even if it’s just a few minutes each day.

Overcoming Creative Blocks

Everyone has faced a creative block at some point—those moments when inspiration seems impossible to find. Rather than forcing ideas, try giving your mind a break. Sometimes the best thing you can do for creativity is to step away for a while. Go for a walk, read a book, or watch a movie.

Our School Trip to CSE

On February 6, 2025, our school organized a trip to the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE), the only stock exchange in Sri Lanka. The CSE’s main office is located in Colombo, specifically at the World Trade Center (WTC).

We gathered at our school's international branch at 7:45 AM and left for the WTC at 8:15 AM. The journey was fun, my friend Dulen almost fell off the bus, and when he attempted to sing a song, his voice cracked, making everyone laugh.

After a long journey, we finally arrived at the WTC around 9:10 AM. We were greeted by an employee there, who summarized what we would be learning. Another speaker gave a PowerPoint presentation about the CSE, explaining how it compares to other stock exchanges around the world, the role of stockbrokers, and the importance of saving and investing.

In a surprise addition to our trip, we also visited the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Sri Lanka, where our teacher in charge introduced us to the organization. We received three educational leaflets about the SEC and how to be a good investor. The Deputy Director General of the SEC taught us about the commission and the laws that established it. We wrapped up our visit with a Q&A session with the director.

After that, we left and arrived back at school around 12 PM.
